Hopkins Junior High School is a secondary school in Fremont, California, serving the seventh and eighth grades. It is one of five junior high schools in the city belonging to the Fremont Unified School District. Graduates from four local elementary schools attend Hopkins Junior High. Students leaving Hopkins move on to the Mission San Jose High School. Student may also move on to Irvington High School if they choose. The school had the highest API score for public junior high schools in California for the year of 2005, and the second highest in 2006. In 2007, Hopkins had the highest API in the State of California.[1]

The Science Bowl team won second place in the Nationals in 2008 and first place nationally in 2009. The 2010 team placed 3rd nationally in May 2010. In 2011, the Science Bowl team won third place at the national competition held in May.
As of the 2009-2010 school year, the Hopkins Math Counts team placed 1st place in their chapter and in the state of California. The team was led by Donna Phair, an algebra teacher. Two members, Lewis Chen and Aaron Lin, proceeded to represent California in the National Math Counts competition. The California Math Counts Team took first place on the written portion of the National Math Counts Competition, while Lewis Chen took third place in the written round. Hopkins also participates in the American Mathematics Competitions, and 6 students qualified to take the AIME. 2 students proceeded to the USAJMO and one, Lewis Chen, to the USAMO.
Hopkins JHS has a comprehensive 7th & 8th grade Instrumental Music Department including approximately 330 students per year. It includes three levels of concert bands (Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble), two levels of jazz bands (Jazz Workshop, Jazz Ensemble), two levels of string orchestras (Intermediate Orchestra, Advanced Orchestra), and a full orchestra. All ensembles participate in multiple performances throughout the year including Winter & Spring Concerts, CMEA Bay Section Festivals, a Music in the Parks Festival at California's Great America, and a Music in the Parks Festival in Anaheim (Disneyland). In Spring 2011, Hopkins' bands, orchestras, and jazz bands received "Superior" ratings at festivals. The Intermediate Orchestra received a "1st Place Overall Orchestra" award at the Great America Festival. Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and Advanced Orchestra received "1st Place Overall" awards at the Disneyland festival, with Advanced Orchestra achieving the highest rating of any group at the festival.[2] (In Spring of 2010, the Hopkins Advanced Orchestra received an overall score of "100" at the Anaheim/Disneyland Festival.[3]) The Hopkins Advanced Orchestra was recently selected to perform at the California All-State Music Education Conference in February 2012.[4]
The school has had a strong chess team taking 1st place in the Northern California State Scholastic Chess Championship in 1993, 1995–1997, 1999, 2001–2003, 2005–2007, and 2010.[1] Additionally, it won the 1996 National Junior High Chess Championship in Kissimmmee, Florida.[2]
